Viticulture involves many aspects of grape cultivation, including:
- Selecting grape varieties suited to the climate and soil.
- Planting and training vines using trellises or other support systems.
- Pruning vines to control growth and improve fruit quality.
- Managing pests and diseases to keep vines healthy.
- Irrigation and soil management to provide the right growing conditions.
- Harvesting grapes at the optimal stage of ripeness.
- Recording when grapes are available and record data on the grape vines.
Viticulture is different from winemaking:
- Viticulture focuses on growing the grapes.
- Enology (or oenology) focuses on making wine from those grapes.
Together, viticulture and enology are the two main disciplines of the wine industry.
For example, a viticulturist might decide when to prune vines, how much water they need, and the best time to harvest, while an enologist determines how to ferment the harvested grapes into wine.
