Saint Uriel

Uriel is one of the archangels named in certain ancient Jewish and Christian writings, although he is not one of the three archangels officially named in the Roman Catholic Bible (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael).

Uriel is traditionally portrayed as:

  • 🔥 Bearer of God’s light — representing divine illumination and truth
  • 📖 Angel of wisdom — associated with understanding mysteries and knowledge
  • ⚖️ Angel of repentance and judgment — sometimes connected with God’s justice
  • 🌅 Guide through darkness — symbolizing spiritual clarity and discernment
  • 🕯️ Often depicted holding a flame, lamp, book, or scroll

📜 Uriel in ancient traditions

Uriel appears prominently in 1 Enoch, an ancient Jewish apocalyptic work, where he is one of the great angels. He is also associated with Noah in some traditions, warning him about the coming Flood.

In some Eastern Christian traditions, Uriel is honored among the seven archangels.

🙏 A simple prayer to Uriel

Archangel Uriel, bearer of God’s light,
illuminate my mind with wisdom,
guide me toward truth,
and help me recognize God’s presence
in the choices I make.
May divine light overcome confusion and fear.
Amen.
